GLP-1 Supplement Guide

On a GLP-1? Your body needs more than less food.

GLP-1 medications reduce appetite. That is their mechanism. A smaller plate means less protein, fewer vitamins, reduced creatine intake, and disrupted digestion. Anchor is built to fill exactly those gaps.

The four things that slip when appetite drops.

GLP-1 medications are effective tools for weight management. The clinical evidence is clear. So is the evidence about what happens to nutrition when someone eats a fraction of what they used to.

This guide covers the four most documented nutritional risks, the specific trials that named them, and what each Anchor product addresses.

1. Lean muscle mass

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial (tirzepatide, Jastreboff et al., NEJM 2022, 2,539 participants, 67.5% female), participants lost an average of 15 to 21% of body weight over 72 weeks. The weight lost included lean mass, not only fat. This is consistent with any significant caloric restriction: the body does not selectively lose fat when protein intake is insufficient.

Your muscles still need protein to stay intact. The threshold most protein researchers use is 0.7 grams per pound of bodyweight per day to maintain lean mass during caloric restriction. When you are eating 1,000 calories a day because your appetite is suppressed, hitting that number is a practical challenge, not a motivation problem.

Anchor Whey Protein Isolate

Whey Protein Isolate

26g protein per serving. Fills the gap when appetite suppression makes hitting protein targets difficult.

Anchor Creatine Monohydrate

Creatine Monohydrate

5g daily supports muscle protein synthesis and phosphocreatine stores. Per Lanhers et al., J Sports Med, 2017.

2. Daily energy levels

Creatine is not only for athletes. Every cell in your body uses phosphocreatine to regenerate ATP, the molecule that powers movement, cognition, and basic metabolic function. When food intake drops, dietary creatine intake drops with it. This matters most during the early months of GLP-1 therapy when fatigue is commonly reported.

The STEP 1 trial (semaglutide 2.4mg, Wilding et al., NEJM 2021) listed fatigue among adverse events. The cause is not purely appetite suppression. It is reduced substrate availability for basic cellular energy production. Creatine addresses the substrate problem.

3. Hydration and magnesium

Constipation is a top-five side effect in both the STEP 1 and SURMOUNT-1 trials. The mechanism is direct: GLP-1 medications slow gastric emptying. Slower transit means more water reabsorption in the colon, harder stool, and constipation.

Magnesium glycinate is the form with the highest gut tolerability. The glycine chelate form absorbs before it reaches the large intestine, which produces less laxative effect and more systemic benefit. It also supports sleep quality, which is separately relevant given the fatigue that typically accompanies dose escalation.

Magnesium glycinate is widely used in clinical practice for GLP-1-related constipation. Formal trials in this specific population are ongoing.

4. Digestive comfort

Slower gastric emptying is a feature, not a bug. It is part of how GLP-1 medications produce satiety. But it also means food stays in your stomach longer, your gut moves more slowly, and nutrients that depend on proper motility for absorption can be missed.

Prebiotic fiber supports the gut microbiome and motility. Digestive enzymes support nutrient breakdown when natural digestive timing is altered by the medication. These are not products for a compromised gut. They are products for a gut whose normal pace has been deliberately slowed.
